What is occupational therapy?


Through this therapy professional help is given to people to participate in all activities of life and also making life a meaning one. It tells us as to how we can spend our time and energy effectively. They are associated with the patients, sometimes throughout their lifetime, guiding and helping them to achieve their objectives. The patients are taught various new skills as and when required.

They also help the kids to identify their own problems and also rectify it. They also continue giving time-to-time assistance and activities to make their clients life more meaningful thus helping them to keep themselves engaged in some meaning activities in life. They also help people to avoid failures. From time to time they provide the necessary guidance, for e.g. If a person had suffered from any major injury necessary training on grooming is provided and if person is suffering from low memory then various steps are taken to improve the memory like he/she is told to jot down the things so that it can be referred to if required. Suppose a homemaker has suffered a stroke then she is encouraged to take part in the daily activities such as looking after the members of the family and taking part in all-household chores. Various methods are used to make the patient contribute to the regular stream. A student who attends classroom in a wheelchair knows that he/she too has a scope to contribute towards the society.

A person desiring to become an occupational therapist should be highly motivated to serve the society. They should have immense patience to deal the client and in no way give negative vibes to the patients. They should have strong communicative skills.
